The new BitNami Images for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) enable production deployments of source applications such as Drupal, Joomla!, Wordpress, SugarCRM, and Alfresco on the Amazon EC2 cloud. By leveraging Amazon's persistent storage service, the new BitNami Images provide the ability to start, stop, backup and restore servers without losing data.
_San Francisco, CA. September 21, 2010. – _BitNami, the project that simplifies the process of deploying and managing web applications natively, virtually and in the cloud, announced today the availability of all of the BitNami-packaged applications as Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)-backed AMIs. The freely available BitNami Images for EBS make it easy to run popular open source applications on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
"The BitNami Amazon Machine Images backed by S3 that we offer are great for evaluating or developing with popular open source applications, but they are not well-suited to running applications in production because the data may be lost if a server goes down," said Erica Brescia, the CEO of BitRock, which develops BitNami. "Our new EBS images provide a great way to host open source applications on top of EC2 because they provide persistent storage and a way to create backups using snapshots. With the new micro-sized instances from Amazon, they offer a very cost-effective way to run open source applications in the cloud."
Amazon EBS provides block storage volumes for use with Amazon EC2 instances. These storage volumes exist separately from application instances and provide highly reliable storage. They are automatically replicated within the same availability zone to ensure persistence of data. In addition to providing highly available, reliable storage, Amazon EBS also provides the ability to take snapshots of storage volumes at a given point in time and then store those snapshots on Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3). The snapshots can then be used to create new Amazon EBS volumes or to restore servers that have been lost or corrupted.
BitNami's ready-to-deploy images for over 25 different open source applications, including Drupal, Joomla!, Wordpress, SugarCRM, and Alfresco, combined with Amazon EC2 and EBS, provide a cost-effective and easy to manage solution for running open source applications in the cloud. All of the BitNami EBS Images are available free of charge, so the only cost to users are the costs associated with using Amazon EC2, EBS and S3.
