  GitHub

Logical Awesome is the developer of GitHub, a widely used website for social coding. GitHub is built on top of Git, a fast, efficient, distributed version control system ideal for the collaborative development of software. GitHub provides an easy way for developers to participate in that collaboration: fork projects, send pull requests, monitor development, all with ease. GitHub is used by over 125,000 developers and growing.

BitRock has been a pleasure to work with as GitHub enters into the enterprise market. Our customers are always amazed at how easy it is to install our stack in any number of configurations.

- PJ Hyett, Co-founder, Logical Awesome

Products: GitHub is a distributed version control system that makes it easy for people to collaborate on software development projects. Although GitHub was originally offered only as software as a service (SaaS), an on-premise version is now available as well, thanks to Logical Awesome's collaboration with BitRock. The SaaS version of GitHub is available at several different subscription levels to meet the needs of open source projects, consultants and companies of all sizes.

GitHub: Firewall Install (GitHub:FI) is the newly released on-premise version of GitHub. It allows companies to run GitHub behind their own firewalls to provide enhanced control and security.

Challenge:

After seeing increasing demand for an on-site version of their product, Logical Awesome approached BitRock to package the new version, GitHub:Firewall Install (GitHub:FI) for easy on-site installation. This would allow Logical Awesome to reach a new set of potential customers; those who will only use GitHub if they can run it on their internal network.

GitHub:FI is a Ruby on Rails application that requires several third party components, including Ruby on Rails, JRuby, Python, Perl, OpenSSL, Solr, Java, and Git. Putting the installation and configuration burden on customers would likely increase support requests while providing a less than optimal first impression for new customers.

BitRock Solution:

BitRock packaged all of the required components in a completely integrated, self-contained installer. The installer prompts the user for a few pieces of information and then automatically installs and configures all of the software required to run GitHub:FI without interfering with software already installed on the user's system. It will run in text, GUI and unattended modes for installation in any environment. With BitRock-packaged GitHub:FI, engineering teams can quickly be up and running with a fast, easy to use distributed version control system inside their firewall.
